Rok Rappl _ Rocc

Slovenian-born opera stage director, designer and dramaturge ROCC (*1979) studied opera stage direction at the Janáček Academy in Brno, a course which he followed up by postgraduate studies of stage design in Zurich, and with rosalie in Offenbach am Main. He was granted a scholarship by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, as well as receiving support from the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. His pseudonym is a tribute to Marie Mrázková, Roccʼs professor of stage acting – and his true mentor. At the age of 35 as an internationally renowned theatre artist Rocc has staged and designed already 30 opera productions (for example in the National Theatres in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Ljubljana, Riga, Opera Bergen in Norway, etc.) with his own characteristic but always rather different author approach. His true passion is contemporary music theatre (he staged 8 world premieres) combined with alternative performing arts, installation, new media and site-specific projects. Since 2013 Rocc is the initiator and Artistic Director of "Opera Povera", an ensemble focused on contemporary scenic aesthetics. In the 2007/08 season Rocc held the post of Dramaturge in the Slovenian National Opera in Maribor. The 2008/09 season saw him as Deputy Artistic Director and Dramaturge of the Janáček Opera of the National Theatre in Brno and 2009–11 he has been Artistic Director of the Janáček Opera. In 2011–13 he has been Artistic Director of the Prague State Opera, which is from 2012 affiliated with the National Opera in Prague. In November 2013 he became Artistic Director of the Slovenian National Opera in his hometown Ljubljana. Rocc also works as a pedagogue of stage movement and acting for young opera singers, he has been a member of juries of international singing competitions. Rocc staged together with Vit Zouhar 2 opera pieces for the National Theatre Brno: Noci Dnem (2005) and La Dafne (with Hanzlík, 2011)

Inspired by Grotowski's theory of the "poor theater" and the artistic style of "arte povera", Rocc laid the basic thesis of "opera povera" (literally translated from Italian "poor opera" or "poor work"): – Having a feeling that today's world and art are overfilled with quantity of information and material ballast, Opera Povera is trying to find the essence of operatic art in its modesty and simplicity. – Opera Povera is searching more than 400 years back in the history to the birth of opera genre in search for its original definition and the true meaning of opera itself. – Opera Povera is a method of creating or staging operas as anti-spectacular audio-visual art and thus, it becomes counter-position to the classic "opulent" understanding of operatic form. – Opera Povera believes in minimalist and functionalist approach when working with content, form and material. – Opera Povera clearly proclaims that "less is more" and thus tries with simple ("poor") means to achieve maximal spiritual and emotional communication between performer and audience.
